What is Mesothelioma Disease?

mesothelioma cancer

Most of the internal organs of the human body are covered with a thin layer of tissue, which is known as the mesothelium. Cancer that occurs in the tissue’s thin layer is called Mesothelioma cancer. This cancer is a severe type of cancer; hence, it is rightly considered as one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Although the treatment for this cancer is available, it has been found that cure for this disease, in most cases, is not possible.

The physicians divide this disease into different kinds depending on the place of occurrence of this cancer. Mostly, it takes place around the lungs tissue, and such a type of cancer is known as pleural mesothelioma. Some other diseases of this same type affect the abdominal muscles, while some others take place in the tissues of testicles and the heart.

What are some of the common symptoms of this cancer?

The symptoms of mesothelioma cancer are not the same for every person because it varies from one person to the other. As discussed, pleural mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs around the lungs tissues, and the symptoms of the disease include painful coughing, breathlessness, lumps of muscles on the chest or under the skin and chest pain.

On the other hand, peritoneal mesothelioma takes place in the abdominal tissues. The symptoms of this disease are severe pain in the abdominal area along with inflammation, loss of weight, and feeling of nausea.

There are other forms of mesothelioma cancers as well, but as occurrence percentage of such types are very rare, hence, the symptoms of this disease are not apparent yet.

If somebody develops pericardial mesothelioma, then the tissues surrounding the heart is affected. Some of the symptoms include chest pain and shortness of breath.

Therefore, the most critical question is, when should a person visit a doctor?

Generally, patients visit the doctors when there are worrying symptoms, and mesothelioma cancer is no exception. Whenever a patient feels worried about ongoing symptoms, he should visit the physician immediately. Also, one should talk to the doctor in detail for the proper and timely diagnosis of the disease.

What causes this deadly cancer?

Almost every cancer starts with mutations that take place in the DNA of a cell. The DNA instructs the cells, and they function accordingly. The changes that make a place in DNA tell the cells to multiply abnormally, thus leading to the formation of a tumor.

Although it is still unclear about what is the exact cause that gives rise to these changes in the cells, however; researchers have found out the risk factors. They are poor food habits, choice of lifestyle, health, and environmental conditions that can trigger the formation of cancers of tumors in the human body.

What are some risk factors for this disease?

One must remember that exposure to asbestos is the most common risk factor. The more is the exposure to asbestos; more are an individual’s risks to develop mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos is abundant in nature, and it is used to make asbestos fibers. The asbestos fibers prove to be very useful when it comes to flooring, insulations, etc. However, during the process of asbestos mining, dust coming out of, if inhaled, settles in the stomach or lungs that might lead to mesothelioma in the long run.

Also, there are some factors, such as a lengthy history of exposure to asbestos, staying with somebody that works with asbestos every day, hereditary symptoms that might put a person at a higher risk of developing this disease.

For patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma, some of the common complications involve severe pain in chest, difficulty while swallowing the food, shortness of breath, etc.

What are some of the preventive measures?

The most crucial measure for somebody is minimizing the exposure to asbestos. If the vulnerability is reduced, then the chances of developing this disease will also subside. People like plumbers, miners of asbestos, demolition workers, insulators, and pipefitters are at a higher risk of developing this disease.

To know more about this disease and the safety measures, one should talk to the doctor and follow the precautions of safety at the workplace.
